smelling the poultry
Well, I was having a friend over for dinner the other night, so I picked up some chicken at the Edgewood Giant Eagle to throw into some pasta; however, when I opened up the package there was the distinctive odor of old seafood. Rather than risking a double case of salmonella, I decided to punt on the chicken and make vegetarian pasta.
Here's the thing -- when I was a little kid, sometimes my brother and I used to accompany our grandma Lili to the supermarket in Manhttan when she was shopping for dinner. Dinner often involved a roast duck or two, a product for which grandma had a somewhat interesting selection process. See, the ducks were in shrink-wrapped packages inside a refridgerated case, and grandma (discriminating woman that she is) wanted to make sure she got the freshest one. So, she would take out her apartment keys, poke a hole in the shrink wrap, and smell the duck to see if it was to her liking. If not, she'd repeat until she found a good one.
Now that I'm older and I understand the world a little better, I realize that this is not a normal way to shop for poultry. However, judging from my Giant Eagle experience the other day, maybe I'm going to do it grandma-style in the future.
