10/29/2004: limbo
So work was supposed to send me to San Diego this week to help deliver a vehicle to the Navy, and I'm actually really looking forward to going to the west coast. But instead of going, I've been in limbo because the vehicle is waiting for a part to come in. In the meantime, we're trying to suss out all the little electrical & mechanical integration flaws onboard. Since the project manager is already away in San Diego, there's a curious management vacuum, which I can only fill slightly on account of I'm not actually a manager and it pisses people off when I hassle them to get the vehicle working.
Anyways, might go to a halloween party or 2 this weekend, and I really need to get my ass in gear on finishing up my grad school apps.
10/11/2004: happy columbus day
I was biking to work this morning and Cambridge was a ghost town... based on traffic, I actually wondered if I had somehow set my clock ahead two hours by mistake last night -- until I remembered that a large portion of the world gets Columbus Day as a holiday.
In other news, we got a cat. Our landlord found him crying in her driveway one night, and she took him inside to feed him. After a couple of days, she convinced us to take him in (ironic, since she wrote a "no pets" clause into our lease). We've named him Bogart. His chief habits seem to be sleeping, eating, and pawing furiously at the doors and windows. Hopefully he'll get used to being an indoor cat soon. Otherwise, he's really friendly and responds really well to affection, so I think his prospects for being a house cat are good.
Hopefully, we'll bring him to the vet soon so he can get fixed and get all the shots he needs.
This weekend I rented Bob Roberts, which is a wonderfully nuanced (if chilling) faux documentary about a neo-conservitive senatorial candidate (Tim Robbins) during the 1990's. It was made even better by a ton of brief appearances by Jack Black, John Cusack, Susan Sarandon, Helen Hunt, James Spader, and others. Hopefully Bush won't manipulate the pubic quite so successfully.
Not much else to report, except for some good software successes at work, which have been gratifying.
